Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens
can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Margaret Mead

If you've made it this far then you must have some interest in the future of this planet. Perhaps you also agree with me that humanity is on an unsustainable path with our natural world and you want to change our current situation. My intention here is to help spread a vision of how this can be done. I don't claim to know how to do this but I do have some ideas. No solutions, only a path that leads in the right direction, pieces of the puzzle.

The goal of the Global Ecology Network is to create a network of individuals that are committed to a common cause. Through this site I plan to offer my perspectives and why we're at a crossroads in human history. I believe that the only way to understand our current situation is to grasp what it is to be human and how we fit into this planet. I believe that the majority of us, including myself,  are out of touch with this concept. The simple facts are that less than 200 generations ago we were living a very different type of life style, one that we had evolved into for over a million years.

As just another species on this planet, a very special one of course, we had adapted to our unique biology in conjunction with our environment. I believe that a major part of this adaptation was social and was associated with our physical immaturity at birth and high dependence on a family environment. Yet within almost the blink of an eye (evolutionary speaking) we have separated ourselves not only from our natural ecology but also from our social ecology. We've isolated ourselves within an incredible complex human machine called modern society which is driving us forward at an increasingly complex, fast and, quite frankly, scary rate. I feel like I'm being carried along in some wild ride. How do we get off this ride?

The big key to me is perspective: we need to see humans for what we are. Herein I present my thesis on the subject. If you really want my ideas you'll need to check back often as I, of course, am just figuring this out like everyone else. So let's take a journey. Let's go back and look at our ecology, human ecology, with the idea that if we know where we came from we can chart a better path to where we're going. Next, let's examine how we survived as intelligent beings in our "premature" state; why we developed mythology to guide us (and still do) and how human rituals kept (and can keep) us moving forward and not clinging to the childhood fantasies which dominant modern society (in my humble opinion). Then, I'd like to review how native cultures sustainably managed their natural resources. We can learn a great deal from the past and need to do this before we can move forward. Next, I plan to review our modern educational, research and management institutions with an eye towards how they work and how they can be made better. Finally, I will discuss the development of a new environmental ethic based on an integration of all of these elements. For synthesis and closure, I will present parts of my novel, Paradigm Shift, for you to ponder.

I started out wanting to save nature; to prevent the rampant destruction of our planet. But the more I learned the more I'm convinced that the root of the problem lies within, not without. Because if we, as humans, are centered and connected with our true souls, we are a magical part of  nature. I have experienced this on occasion. After all, we are a product of evolution like every other creature on this planet. In this vein, then, our loss of environmental ethics is just a symptom of our loss of human connections, of what it is to live among other living beings. If we can recapture our heritage, and integrate it into our lives, person by person, and spread this around the world, then I think we have a chance. This is my vision for the future.

If for some reason you're wondering who I am you can check here. I am a man, lost in our humanity like most every one else, but struggling to find myself and concerned about the future of our planet, primarily for the sake of my children.

Ok, now you've read my  preamble and you can move on to the rest of the website. FYI, next time there is a "secret door" on the main page which will allow you to enter directly to the main site. Just look to the far left of the middle of the globe. Please don't tell this to anyone, let them find it as you have. It is part of the journey I have planned! Onward!!
